In the second edition of the SA20 League, the final clash took place between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Durban Super Giants. Following a month-long tournament featuring six franchises, the stage was set for a showdown between the two top-performing teams in the tournament.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape Dominance and Durban Supergiants Resurgence

Sunrisers Eastern Cape finished on top in the group stage, with Durban Super Giants trailing them by just one point to finish 33-32. Sunrisers Eastern Cape, entering the competition as last year’s champions, had previously won the inaugural edition against Pretoria Capitals. Durban Super Giants, on the other hand, missed the playoffs last season and finished fifth in the league stage.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape successfully defended their SA20 title with an impressive 89-run win over Durban Super Giants in the grand finale. This is their second consecutive title, cementing their position as the only team to claim the SA20 trophy.

The Eastern Cape team batted first in the final and scored a huge score of 204 runs on the board. Every player contributed with a strike rate of at least 150, resulting in a tremendous batting performance. Tristan Stubbs’ explosive innings of 56 runs from 30 balls and Tom Abel’s 55 runs set the stage for a high-scoring innings.

In reply, Durban Super Giants faltered while chasing the target and could only score 115 runs in 16 overs. Wiaan Mulder stood out with a contribution of 38 runs, but got very little support from the rest of the batsmen. Marco Johnson emerged as the hero for Sunrisers Eastern Cape, taking five wickets, while Daniel Worrall and Otniel Bartman supported him with two wickets each.

With the bat, the quartet of Jordan Harman, Tom Abel, Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs played a vital role and scored over 200 runs. Harman and Abel’s 80-run partnership set Durban Supergiants a big target, while Stubbs’ explosive innings took the team to a strong score. Markram’s captaincy proved crucial in the decision to set a challenging target while putting pressure on the Durban Supergiants.

In the bowling department, Marco Jensen’s five-wicket haul in the final not only secured the win but also took him to the top of the bowling charts for the season with a total of 20 wickets. Otneil Bartman and Daniel Worrall made important contributions with 18 and 17 wickets respectively, showing the dominance of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape bowlers throughout the season.

Durban Supergiants suffered an early blow in their chase when Worrall and Jensen demolished their top order. Despite brief resistance from Matthew Britzke and Wiaan Mulder, the Super Giants succumbed to the pressure and were all out for just 115 runs in 17 overs.

A superb batting performance as well as exceptional bowling ensured their victory over the Durban Super Giants in the final, cementing their position as the undisputed champions of the second edition of the SA20 League.
