KL Rahul is being monitored by the BCCI medical team for a possible return for the fourth Test

In a bad news for the Indian cricket team, one of the key batsmen KL Rahul has been ruled out of the third Test against England in Rajkot due to knee pain. The announcement came after the senior selection committee named Rahul for the last three Test matches with the caveat that his participation would be dependent on fitness clearance from the BCCI medical team.

While Ravindra Jadeja got the green signal to play in the important Test, KL Rahul who is still undergoing recovery at the National Cricket Academy is not considered fully fit yet. The medical team has indicated that they will monitor Rahul for another week before making a decision on his availability, with the hope that he will be fit for the fourth Test.

Rahul’s absence has posed challenges for the Indian team, which is already struggling with the absence of Virat Kohli due to personal reasons and the exit of Shreyas Iyer due to lack of form. Karnataka’s talented batsman Devdutt Padikkal has been called up due to KL Rahul‘s injury in what is going to be his first Test match.

Left-handed dynamo earns first Test call-up

Padikkal is being included on the basis of his brilliant performance in the Ranji Trophy, where he recently played a brilliant inning of 151 runs against Tamil Nadu. This season, Padikkal has brought a total of 556 runs in six innings at an average of 92.66, with this he has brought great form to the Indian team. His recent performance for India A against England Lions, which included a century, shows his ability to handle competition at the international level.

The left-handed batsman, who has successfully made the transition from an opening batsman to a versatile top-order batsman for Karnataka, has expressed his desire to bat at different positions. This adaptability of his has been a key factor in his success, which is evident from his stint with Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2023, where he learned under none other than KL Rahul.

Padikkal’s journey into the Test team has included valuable performances during India A’s tour of South Africa in December, where he trained with senior Test players. Reflecting on the experience, he mentioned how it prepared him well for the Ranji season, and stressed the importance of being around experienced cricketers.

Uncapped batsmen Patidar and Sarfaraz are contenders in India’s preparation for the third Test in Rajkot

With uncertainties over Ravindra Jadeja’s availability due to a hamstring injury, India may see another debutant in Rajkot. The team has two uncapped batsmen – Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz Khan – who provide additional options to the playing eleven.

As India prepare for the crucial third Test, with the series level at 1-1, Padikkal’s inclusion brings a boost to the batting lineup. The 23-year-old’s ability to adapt, coupled with his recent stellar performances, makes him a promising addition to the team. With two full days of training ahead of the Rajkot Test, the Indian team aims to overcome the challenges and take the lead in the series.
