Rohit Sharma criticized young players for giving preference to white ball

In the wake of India’s 17th consecutive home Test win, captain Rohit Sharma criticized young players who prefer white-ball cricket and the IPL over the traditional red-ball format. In the absence of senior players, rising stars like Dhruv Jurel and Akash Deep single-handedly led India to a hard-earned victory in the Ranchi Test against England.

The win gave an opportunity to India’s youth to emerge, with players like Jurel, Akash, Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz Khan making their Test debuts in the series. After the win, Rohit lauded the young brigade for their commitment to red-ball cricket, who lack the appetite for the longest format.

“Look, you can tell just by looking at those who are not hungry for Test cricket. Then what is the point of playing all of them?,” Rohit stressed in the post-match press conference.

The Indian captain praised the hunger and fighting spirit of the players in the team, stressing the lack of opportunities in Test cricket and the importance of capitalizing on opportunities when they come.

“I haven’t seen anyone here in the team who is not hungry. All the boys who are here and those who are not, they all want to play. But the thing with Test cricket is that you get very few opportunities. If you Don’t use them, they go away,” Rohit said.

While he compared the difficulty of Test cricket to the IPL, he acknowledged the challenges faced by both batsmen and bowlers in the longest format. Acknowledging the importance of IPL for Indian cricket, Rohit said that players with hunger for Test cricket will be given priority by the team management and will be given many opportunities to showcase their talent.

“IPL is a very good format for us, but it is the toughest format and it is difficult to excel in it. You have to work hard to win…the last three wins were not easy, the bowlers had to bowl long spells, the batsmen You have to sweat to score runs, it’s tough,” Rohit said.

Players’ worries increased due to choosing IPL instead of Ranji Trophy, BCCI Secretary expressed concern

The captain’s comments to the players came amidst the controversy over them quitting Ranji Trophy in favor of IPL, over which BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has expressed concern. Notable examples include Ishan Kishan, who opted out of the Test series against South Africa and the T20I series against Afghanistan without taking part in the Ranji Trophy.

Rohit’s statement has fueled speculation over a possible link-up with Ishan Kishan, who has not played any competitive cricket since his break. The BCCI directive regarding consequences for players not participating in domestic cricket adds further weight to this debate.
