The second round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers between India and Afghanistan was played at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, in which India lost 1-2. This defeat has become a controversial one for India’s coach Igor Stimac because this is the first time in which India has faced consecutive defeats in the last one year. India has faced defeat in 5 out of the last six matches while one has faced defeat. The match was drawn against Afghanistan.

India’s FIFA ranking is continuously falling downwards. The current ranking is 117th. In December 2023, the team’s ranking was 102nd. And the Blue Tigers have not scored any goals in the last five matches, hence the defeat against Afghanistan in the second round has raised many questions about Igor Stimac’s coaching.

India’s early lead shattered with Afghanistan win in FIFA World Cup qualifiers

India and Afghanistan In the beginning of the second round, Blue Tigers maintained pressure on Afghanistan and in the first half, India maintained possession over the Afghan team and Sunil Chhetri gave the team the lead by scoring a goal in the 38′ minute of the first half. And ended the drought without scoring a goal in 5 consecutive matches.

In the second round of the match, Afghan players started the attack in large numbers in which mainly Skandari and Akbari made many shots in the Indian camp. They got the result of so many shots in the 70′ minute and Rahmat Akbari shot from outside the box and equalized the scoreline within 20 minutes of the second round.

The Indian spectators were shocked when Afghanistan took the lead in the match by scoring the second goal in the 88′ minute of the second round, Afghanistan’s second goal was scored by Sharif Muhammad in the form of a penalty. After this goal, all the hopes of victory of the Indian camp ended. After the match, Indian spectators started chanting ‘Stimac out’.

Igor Stimac’s social media posts are being criticized after India’s defeat in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

After this defeat, Igor Stimac posted on social media, “More than half of our players have played a slow game and I regret that I cannot change this in 5 days. We accept our individual mistakes, tactical work. No | I don’t see any problem with the tactical work. Draw This defeat is practically a win, not much changes. We had a good chance to score today and win the game but I don’t want the field for the players to score goals. But can’t go.” Indian football fans are disappointed after this statement.
