FC Goa booked a place in the Indian Super League 2023-24 playoffs with a 3-3 draw against Punjab FC in a thrilling encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

FC Goa’s early dominance, McHugh breakthrough puts Punjab on alert

In the first half, the Gaurs showcased their skills and showed complete dominance in the first half as they kept pressure on Punjab FC’s defense with continuous attacks. The duo of Rainier Fernandes, Noah Saadaoui and Herrera continued to try to score goals against Ravi Kumar, but they had an answer to every goal attempt and only one goal was scored in the first half, which was scored by McHugh for Goa in the beginning of the match. Did it in just 5 minutes.

There was a flurry of goals in the second half, in which Punjab FC’s aggressive duo of Madih Talal, Luca Majsen and Wilmer Jordan Gill showed their magic. In the 54th minute, Talal’s control and a well-taken cross leveled the score line by Gill, who assisted Majsen in a wonderful goal, giving Punjab FC a one-goal lead in the 62nd minute.

In the 72nd minute, Noah leveled the score once again for FC Goa with a spot-kick from Boris Singh’s clever pass. However, the level score did not last long as Juan Mera took advantage of FC Goa’s poor defense and gave Punjab FC the lead in the 78th minute.

FC Goa fought back to keep their playoff hopes alive and in the 84th minute, striker Carlos Martínez tapped in a squared-up delivery from Noah to head the ball into the net and secure a crucial point for playoff qualification. .

Luca Majcen’s performance was commendable as he scored a goal and an assist, completed 13 of 16 passes, made a clearance and an interception and drew three fouls in the game.

This draw has baked the ticket for the playoffs of FC Goa, in this 18th match they are in the top four with 33 points, above them is Odisha FC who have got 35 points in 18 matches. FC Goa’s next match will be against Bengaluru FC on March 14 at 7:30 pm IST. On the other hand, Punjab FC’s playoff hopes seem to be ending. After ending today’s match in a draw, they will face Odisha FC which will be played on 2nd April.
