Australia vs New Zealand day 1 highlights: An interesting encounter was witnessed on the first day of the first Test between New Zealand and Australia at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. Highlights of Session 1

Australia, who came to bat first, made a cautious start against the New Zealand bowlers. Openers Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith made a solid partnership to lay the foundation of the innings. Khawaja displayed particular resilience, facing 116 balls for his 33 runs. Steven Smith was out after scoring 31 runs on 71 balls and could not score much runs with his bat and became the victim of Matt Henry. Australia reached 61/1 at the end of the 24th over. The Kiwi bowlers got some success when Scott Kuggeleijn dismissed Marnus Labuschagne for just 1 run.

Highlights of Season 2

Australia counterattacked in the second session with the Kiwi bowlers taking the wickets of Steven Smith (31) and Travis Head (1) in quick succession. Khawaja was a key man, opening the innings with 28 runs off 75 balls. The introduction of Scott Kuggeleijn and William O’Rourke into attack provided significant breakthroughs for New Zealand. Cameron Green joined Khawaja in the middle and they managed to take Australia to 71/2 after 34 overs.

Highlights of Season 3

In the final session of the day, Australia suffered a batting collapse as their wickets kept falling in droves. Usman Khawaja was bowled by William O’Rourke after scoring 33 runs after a flexible innings.

The middle order faced a tough test from the New Zealand bowlers, with Matt Henry and Tim Southee continuing the attack. Cameron Green, however, stood firm amid the fall of wickets. Green displayed his class and scored an impressive 103 runs with the help of 16 fours in 155 balls.

Nathan Lyon supported Green and contributed 5 runs to their partnership. The day ended with Australia at 279/9 after 85 overs.

Cameron Green’s resilient innings was the highlight of the day, as he played a crucial role in taking Australia to a competitive score. New Zealand’s bowlers, particularly Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Scott Kuggeleijn and William O’Rourke, performed admirably, taking wickets at regular intervals.

Australia and New Zealand are going to have a tough encounter on the second day as Australia aim to add valuable runs to their total, while New Zealand aim to wrap up the innings quickly and get a strong start in their reply.
